Andes virus discovered in Argentina
Argentine researchers in El Bolsón, Río Negro Province, isolated a hantavirus distinct from Sin Nombre virus from HPS patients. The new virus was named for the mountain range running through its endemic region. The following year, a cluster of cases in physicians who had treated index patients in Buenos Aires would provide the first evidence of person-to-person hantavirus transmission.
