Bundibugyo ebolavirus discovered in Uganda
CDC laboratory analysis identified a previously-unknown Ebola virus species in samples from an outbreak in Bundibugyo District, western Uganda. The new species — sharing roughly 70% of its genome with the other ebolaviruses — was named for the district. The original outbreak produced 149 cases and 37 deaths. Bundibugyo virus would later cause the 2026 DRC/Uganda PHEIC tracked on this site.
